As a Viking, Hiccup is a failure. He is skinny, inquisitive and inventive. When he should be fighting the dragons that attack his village, he is instead inventing less-than-successful contraptions and asking unwanted questions.

This would almost be acceptable if it weren’t for the fact that his father is Stoick the Vast, the chief of the village! Stoick has pretty much given up on his teenage son and has sent Hiccup to be an apprentice to Gobber, the village blacksmith. What is worse is that Hiccup is desperate to impress the beautiful Astrid, a formidable dragon fighter, and being as he is, he feels that he has no chance.

When at last one of Hiccup’s inventions works and brings down a dragon, he doesn’t have the heart to kill the captured young creature. Although throughout his life, the village has taught everyone to fear and loathe dragons, he names it Toothless and befriends it.

Through Hiccup and his adventures, the village, and especially his father, learn some important life lessons concerning family – and dragons!
